"Winter
brushed by a burnt sky we will burn together
in the plaster of a cold gail pounding upon our breasts
with the charms of the afternoon chill and enchanted voices
we rest with the souls of winter".
(Emily Loren Moss Ferrell).
"French sound artist David Teboul (Linear Bells) graces us with a captivating ambient composition: a single long-form song. The recording slowly unfolds, one petal at a time, over its forty minute length.
Cellos gently swell and fade, quivering ever so slightly. Tiny showers of rain and wind are carefully arranged into a scratchy, crackling foundation, now and then spattering strongly; a subtle storm in the making. String loops shimmer in and out, poised between minor and major motifs, lightly draped across the senses, layered over and over.
The album closes with a brief run of synthesized, hollow beats; a mechanical, metallic accompaniment to the strings and choral wash. In time, the percussion fades, returning to the trembling cello strains that began the performance.
For all the individual elements that comprise this experience, Teboul's music is restrained; drones and atmospheric textures are crafted with an exquisitely delicate touch. We find ourselves in a cold, drizzling city, crowded with dark, muted figures rushing to and fro--but Linear Bells takes us down quieter back alleys to a sheltering doorway, inviting us to close our eyes and just listen."
